Class 4 Alberta Limo, Uber or Taxi Driver's Licence

Requirements for Class 4 Alberta Driver’s Licence

In order to obtain a Class 4 Driver’s Licence, you will need to have a valid, full Class 5 (non-GDL) licence or higher in good standing.

Class 4 Knowledge Test

You can prepare for the enhanced knowledge test by reading the Commercial Driver’s Guide. Please note that you should also review the Driver’s Guide (the book you studied before you took your Class 7 Learner’s) as there are some general questions included on the Commercial knowledge tests as well. When you are thoroughly prepared, come into our office to take the computerized knowledge test. The cost is $17 and an appointment is not necessary. Please be sure to arrive to our office at least one hour before closing (i.e. arrive by 4:15 pm on weekdays and by 1:15 pm on Saturday).

Please note that this test is available in English only and translation is not allowed.

Driving as a Class 4 Learner

Once you pass the Class 4 Knowledge Test, we will validate your permit and you can use the permit (with your Driver’s Licence) to operate Class 4 vehicles as a learner (with someone who has a valid Commercial Licence who is over 18 yrs of age). The permit is valid for one year. If more than one year passes, you will need to purchase a new permit and take the Class 4 Knowledge Test again.

Class 4 Reclass

After you pass the Class 4 enhanced knowledge test and have a valid driver’s medical, you are ready to re-class your licence. The fee for this service is $28.

Please note that you will have to provide a completed Medical Examination for Motor Vehicle Operators form which has been filled out by an Alberta physician. This will be required every five years to age 39, four years to age 40, 3 years to age 41, every two years from age 42-62, and annually thereafter.
